Ohio Paycheck Calculator With Bonus: What You Actually Take Home
Use this Ohio paycheck calculator with bonus to see what a bonus really adds to your check. Ohio withholds 2.75% state income tax on a bonus paid separately in 2026, and many Ohio cities withhold municipal tax on it too.
Enter your salary and bonus, then switch between a separate bonus check and a bonus added to a regular paycheck to see how each method changes what lands in your account.
Your pay and bonus
Keep the bonus separate from your regular salary.
Bonus take-home pay
22% federal + 2.75% Ohio supplemental rate.
Withholding is not your final tax. The method your employer uses changes the size of your bonus check, not the tax you owe when you file. Ohio city and school district income taxes are not included here.

HOW BONUSES ARE WITHHELD
How a Bonus Is Taxed on Your Ohio Paycheck
A bonus is a supplemental wage: ordinary income taxed at your normal rates when you file, but withheld under special rules. On a separate check, the usual Ohio total is about 32.4% of the bonus.
Federal rules let employers withhold a flat 22% on a bonus paid separately from regular wages (37% on supplemental wages above $1 million a year), or add the bonus to a regular paycheck and withhold on the combined amount as if it were paid every period — the aggregate method, which usually holds back more.
Ohio Administrative Code 5703-7-10 lets employers withhold state tax on supplemental compensation — bonuses, commissions, and similar pay — at a flat rate. For payments made in 2026 that rate is 2.75%, down from 3.5% in 2025, matching Ohio's new flat income tax rate.
If the bonus is instead added to a regular paycheck, Ohio withholding is figured on the combined check with the regular annualized formula and IT 4 exemptions. That can withhold slightly more or less than 2.75%, depending on where your salary falls in the withholding table.
Ohio municipal income tax is not covered by the state rate. Most Ohio cities tax bonuses as wages — Columbus at 2.5%, Cleveland at 2.5%, Cincinnati at 1.8% — and some school districts add their own income tax. Enter those rates in the main Ohio calculator if they apply to you.

WORKED EXAMPLES
Ohio Paycheck Calculator With Bonus: Worked Examples
Bonus take-home pay on a $75,000 salary, single filer, bi-weekly pay, no bonus deferral. The regular bi-weekly paycheck at this salary is about $2,297.36 after tax.
| Bonus | Ohio tax (flat) | Take-home (separate check) | Take-home (aggregate) | Aggregate withholding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $28 | $676 | $674 | 32.6% |
| $2,500 | $69 | $1,690 | $1,664 | 33.4% |
| $5,000 | $138 | $3,380 | $3,288 | 34.2% |
| $10,000 | $275 | $6,760 | $6,102 | 39.0% |
| $25,000 | $688 | $16,900 | $14,142 | 43.4% |
Reading the table: the aggregate method holds back more up front, not more tax overall. Any excess withholding comes back when you file your federal and Ohio returns.

How to Keep More of a Ohio Bonus
In Ohio a traditional 401(k) deferral from a bonus avoids federal and Ohio income tax but generally not Ohio municipal income tax, which most cities apply to wages before retirement deferrals. Every $1,000 deferred from an Ohio bonus keeps about $247.50 of federal and state withholding out of the bonus check (22% + 2.75%), while city tax on that $1,000 still applies.
- Ask HR whether your 401(k) election applies to bonuses, and whether a separate bonus deferral rate is allowed.
- Time HSA or dependent-care FSA contributions so pre-tax room is available in the bonus pay period.
- Check the bonus line on your pay stub: a federal amount well above 22% means the aggregate method was used.
- Do not adjust your W-4 for a one-time bonus; any over-withholding is settled when you file.
USING THE CALCULATOR
How to Use This Ohio Paycheck Calculator With Bonus
- Enter your annual gross salary and the bonus amount you expect.
- Pick your pay frequency — it decides how the aggregate method annualizes the combined check.
- Choose how the bonus is paid: a separate check or added to a regular paycheck.
- Set your federal filing status, your IT 4 total, and any 401(k) or pre-tax deductions.
- Compare both methods in the bottom panel to see which one matches your pay stub.
To tell which method your employer used, divide the federal tax withheld on the bonus line of your pay stub by the gross bonus. A result near 22% points to the flat method; a noticeably higher result points to the aggregate method, and the Ohio paycheck calculator with bonus shows both side by side.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Ohio bonus Paycheck Questions
How much is a bonus taxed in Ohio in 2026?+
A bonus paid separately is usually withheld at 22% federal, 2.75% Ohio, and 7.65% Social Security and Medicare — 32.4% before any city tax. A $5,000 Ohio bonus at those rates leaves about $3,380, less municipal and school district tax where they apply.
What is the Ohio supplemental tax rate for 2026?+
2.75%. Ohio Adm.Code 5703-7-10 ties the supplemental withholding rate to Ohio's top income tax rate, which fell to a flat 2.75% for 2026. The 2025 supplemental rate was 3.5%.
Do Ohio cities tax bonuses?+
Generally yes. Ohio municipal income taxes apply to wages, including bonuses, at the city's rate — for example 2.5% in Columbus and Cleveland. School district income tax may also apply based on where you live.
Why does the Ohio aggregate method differ from 2.75%?+
Ohio's regular withholding formula uses annualized brackets and $650 IT 4 exemptions, so adding a bonus to a paycheck is withheld at whatever marginal rate the combined, annualized amount falls into, not at the flat supplemental rate.
Will I get Ohio tax on my bonus back?+
Only if more was withheld than you owe. Ohio's 2026 income tax is a flat 2.75% on income above the $26,050 zero bracket, so withholding at 2.75% on a bonus is usually close to the final Ohio tax on it.
