Your pay and dependents
Dependents count on the federal W-4 and on Ohio Form IT 4.
Take-home pay with dependents
Federal Step 3 credit plus IT 4 exemptions.
Step 3 counts $2,200 per qualifying child under 17 and $500 per other dependent, spread across your 26 paychecks. Each IT 4 dependent removes $650 from Ohio-taxable wages.

HOW DEPENDENTS CHANGE WITHHOLDING
How Dependents Affect Your Ohio Paycheck
On the federal side, dependents do not change your taxable wages. Step 3 of Form W-4 turns them into a dollar credit that payroll subtracts from the federal income tax withheld across the year.
Each qualifying child under 17 is worth $2,200 on Step 3 of the 2026 W-4 and each other dependent $500, as long as your total income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly). Social Security and Medicare are unaffected.
Ohio withholding subtracts $650 from annual wages for every exemption on Form IT 4 — one for you, one for your spouse, and one for each dependent you will claim on your Ohio return — then applies the Ohio withholding table to the rest.
Because the exemption is small and Ohio's rates are low, a dependent changes Ohio withholding by only about $19.50 a year at a $75,000 salary, or roughly $0.75 per bi-weekly check. Almost all of the paycheck gain from a child comes from the federal W-4 Step 3 credit.
Ohio's own dependent exemption on the IT 1040 phases out at higher incomes, but IT 4 withholding uses the flat $650 figure. Exemptions do not reduce municipal income tax, which most Ohio cities apply to gross wages.

WORKED EXAMPLES
Ohio Paycheck Calculator With Dependents: Worked Examples
$75,000 salary, married filing jointly, bi-weekly pay, no pre-tax deductions, two IT 4 personal exemptions plus one per child.
| Children under 17 | Federal savings / check | Ohio savings / check | Bi-weekly take-home | Annual take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 children | $0.00 | $0.00 | $2,414.65 | $62,781 |
| 1 child | $84.62 | $0.75 | $2,500.02 | $65,000 |
| 2 children | $169.23 | $1.50 | $2,585.38 | $67,220 |
| 3 children | $178.46 | $2.24 | $2,595.35 | $67,479 |
| 4 children | $178.46 | $2.99 | $2,596.10 | $67,499 |
Why the gain flattens: at this salary federal withholding runs out after about two children, so additional Step 3 credits cannot lower it further. The rest of the credit is claimed on your tax return.

When to Update Your W-4 and IT 4 in Ohio
In Ohio, give your employer a new IT 4 along with the federal W-4. The IT 4 also carries your school district number, so a move to a new district is another reason to update it.
- A child is born or adopted — add $2,200 to Step 3.
- A child turns 17 during the year — that child moves from $2,200 to $500.
- A dependent moves out or will no longer be claimed — remove them.
- After a divorce or custody change — only the parent claiming the child should list them.
- Your income rises above $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly) — Step 3 no longer applies.
A partner or relative you support can count as an other dependent if they pass the IRS qualifying-relative tests — see can I claim my girlfriend as a dependent. Paying for child care as well? A dependent care FSA covers it with pre-tax pay.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Ohio dependents Paycheck Questions
How much does one child add to my federal withholding?+
Step 3 of the 2026 federal W-4 counts $2,200 for each qualifying child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent. Payroll divides that amount across the year, so one child lowers federal withholding by about $84.62 per bi-weekly paycheck, as long as the withholding before credits is at least that large and your income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly).
How much does a dependent lower Ohio withholding?+
Each IT 4 exemption removes $650 of wages from Ohio withholding. At a $75,000 salary that lowers Ohio withholding by about $19.50 a year, or $0.75 per bi-weekly paycheck.
Do I need a new IT 4 after having a baby?+
Yes, if you want Ohio withholding to change. Ohio employers use only Form IT 4 for state withholding. Updating the federal W-4 does not change the Ohio amount.
Do dependents lower Ohio city income tax?+
No. Ohio municipal income taxes are generally a flat percentage of wages with no personal or dependent exemptions, so your city tax stays the same.
Why is the Ohio change so much smaller than the federal one?+
The federal W-4 gives a $2,200 credit per child against tax. Ohio's IT 4 gives a $650 exemption against wages, which at Ohio's withholding rates is worth well under $25 a year.
