Your pay and dependents
Dependents count on the federal W-4 and on Illinois Form IL-W-4.
Take-home pay with dependents
Federal Step 3 credit plus IL-W-4 allowances.
Step 3 counts $2,200 per qualifying child under 17 and $500 per other dependent, spread across your 26 paychecks. Each IL-W-4 dependent removes $2,925 from Illinois-taxable wages.

HOW DEPENDENTS CHANGE WITHHOLDING
How Dependents Affect Your Illinois Paycheck
On the federal side, dependents do not change your taxable wages. Step 3 of Form W-4 turns them into a dollar credit that payroll subtracts from the federal income tax withheld across the year.
Each qualifying child under 17 is worth $2,200 on Step 3 of the 2026 W-4 and each other dependent $500, as long as your total income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly). Social Security and Medicare are unaffected.
Illinois withholding starts from your wages, subtracts $2,925 for every allowance on Line 1 of Form IL-W-4, and applies 4.95% to the rest. Line 1 counts one allowance for you, one for your spouse if you claim them, and one for each dependent you will claim on your Illinois return.
One dependent therefore removes $2,925 from Illinois-taxable wages and $144.79 from a year of Illinois withholding — about $5.57 per bi-weekly paycheck. That is separate from, and much smaller than, the federal Step 3 credit.
Line 2 of the IL-W-4 is a different allowance: $1,000 each for being 65 or older or legally blind. It does not apply to children. If you change the federal W-4 for a new child, file a new IL-W-4 too; Illinois does not read your federal form.

WORKED EXAMPLES
Illinois Paycheck Calculator With Dependents: Worked Examples
$75,000 salary, married filing jointly, bi-weekly pay, no pre-tax deductions, two IL-W-4 personal allowances plus one per child.
| Children under 17 | Federal savings / check | Illinois savings / check | Bi-weekly take-home | Annual take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 children | $0.00 | $0.00 | $2,353.83 | $61,200 |
| 1 child | $84.62 | $5.57 | $2,444.01 | $63,544 |
| 2 children | $169.23 | $11.14 | $2,534.20 | $65,889 |
| 3 children | $178.46 | $16.71 | $2,549.00 | $66,274 |
| 4 children | $178.46 | $22.28 | $2,554.57 | $66,419 |
Why the gain flattens: at this salary federal withholding runs out after about two children, so additional Step 3 credits cannot lower it further. The rest of the credit is claimed on your tax return.

When to Update Your W-4 and IL-W-4 in Illinois
In Illinois, file a new IL-W-4 at the same time as the federal W-4. Illinois employers must use the IL-W-4 allowances on file, so a new baby or a child moving out changes Illinois withholding only after the new form reaches payroll.
- A child is born or adopted — add $2,200 to Step 3.
- A child turns 17 during the year — that child moves from $2,200 to $500.
- A dependent moves out or will no longer be claimed — remove them.
- After a divorce or custody change — only the parent claiming the child should list them.
- Your income rises above $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly) — Step 3 no longer applies.
A partner or relative you support can count as an other dependent if they pass the IRS qualifying-relative tests — see can I claim my girlfriend as a dependent. Paying for child care as well? A dependent care FSA covers it with pre-tax pay.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Illinois dependents Paycheck Questions
How much does one child add to my federal withholding?+
Step 3 of the 2026 federal W-4 counts $2,200 for each qualifying child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent. Payroll divides that amount across the year, so one child lowers federal withholding by about $84.62 per bi-weekly paycheck, as long as the withholding before credits is at least that large and your income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly).
How much does a dependent lower Illinois withholding?+
Each IL-W-4 allowance removes $2,925 of wages from Illinois withholding. At the 4.95% rate that is $144.79 a year, or about $5.57 on a bi-weekly paycheck.
Do I need to update my IL-W-4 when I have a child?+
Yes. Illinois withholding uses only the allowances on Form IL-W-4. Updating the federal W-4 changes federal withholding but leaves Illinois withholding unchanged until you give your employer a new IL-W-4.
Does the Illinois child tax credit change my paycheck?+
No. The Illinois child tax credit is figured on your Illinois Form IL-1040 and is tied to the Illinois earned income credit. It is not built into the IL-W-4 allowance, so it shows up as a smaller balance due or a larger refund rather than a bigger paycheck.
Can I claim a dependent on both the federal W-4 and the IL-W-4?+
Yes. The two forms are independent. A child under 17 can count toward the federal Step 3 credit and also as an Illinois allowance, so both federal and Illinois withholding go down.
