HOW DEPENDENTS CHANGE WITHHOLDING
How Dependents Affect Your Florida Paycheck
On the federal side, dependents do not change your taxable wages. Step 3 of Form W-4 turns them into a dollar credit that payroll subtracts from the federal income tax withheld across the year.
Each qualifying child under 17 is worth $2,200 on Step 3 of the 2026 W-4 and each other dependent $500, as long as your total income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly). Social Security and Medicare are unaffected.
Because Florida has no personal income tax, there is no Florida W-4, no state allowances, and no state dependent exemption. The full paycheck effect of a child comes from Step 3 of the federal Form W-4.
That makes the math simple: each qualifying child under 17 adds $2,200 a year and each other dependent $500 a year to Step 3, and payroll subtracts the total from federal withholding across your paychecks. Social Security and Medicare do not change.
Federal withholding cannot fall below zero. If your Step 3 amount is larger than the federal tax withheld on your wages, the unused part is not paid out through payroll; it is settled when you file your federal return, where refundability rules for the child tax credit apply.

WORKED EXAMPLES
Florida Paycheck Calculator With Dependents: Worked Examples
$75,000 salary, married filing jointly, bi-weekly pay, no pre-tax deductions.
| Children under 17 | Federal savings / check | Bi-weekly take-home | Annual take-home |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 children | $0.00 | $2,485.48 | $64,623 |
| 1 child | $84.62 | $2,570.10 | $66,823 |
| 2 children | $169.23 | $2,654.71 | $69,023 |
| 3 children | $178.46 | $2,663.94 | $69,263 |
| 4 children | $178.46 | $2,663.94 | $69,263 |
Why the gain flattens: at this salary federal withholding runs out after about two children, so additional Step 3 credits cannot lower it further. The rest of the credit is claimed on your tax return.

When to Update Your W-4 in Florida
In Florida there is no state form to file. Updating Step 3 of the federal W-4 is the only change needed when your family changes.
- A child is born or adopted — add $2,200 to Step 3.
- A child turns 17 during the year — that child moves from $2,200 to $500.
- A dependent moves out or will no longer be claimed — remove them.
- After a divorce or custody change — only the parent claiming the child should list them.
- Your income rises above $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly) — Step 3 no longer applies.
A partner or relative you support can count as an other dependent if they pass the IRS qualifying-relative tests — see can I claim my girlfriend as a dependent. Paying for child care as well? A dependent care FSA covers it with pre-tax pay.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Florida dependents Paycheck Questions
How much does one child add to my federal withholding?+
Step 3 of the 2026 federal W-4 counts $2,200 for each qualifying child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent. Payroll divides that amount across the year, so one child lowers federal withholding by about $84.62 per bi-weekly paycheck, as long as the withholding before credits is at least that large and your income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly).
Is there a Florida W-4 for dependents?+
No. Florida has no state income tax, so there is no state withholding certificate. Dependents are claimed only on the federal Form W-4.
Why didn't my Florida paycheck go up by the full credit?+
Payroll can only reduce federal withholding to zero. On a lower salary the Step 3 credit can be larger than the federal tax withheld, so the rest of the benefit arrives when you file your return.
Do dependents lower Social Security or Medicare?+
No. Social Security and Medicare are a fixed percentage of wages and do not depend on dependents or filing status.
Who counts as an other dependent on the W-4?+
Generally a qualifying child age 17 or older, or a qualifying relative such as a parent you support. Each is worth $500 in Step 3 rather than $2,200.
