Why State Disability Insurance Takes So Much at $22 an Hour

California takes $64 from each check, in two parts. Income tax is $41 and State Disability Insurance is $23. SDI is a flat 1.3% of pay with no wage cap in 2026, so at this wage it comes to more than half of the income tax line. It funds disability and paid family leave benefits, and it shows on your stub as CASDI or SDI.

The two parts behave differently. Income tax here starts low and rises with pay, so filing status and a traditional 401(k) can shrink it. SDI does not care about either. A 5% 401(k) lowers your check by $74 rather than the full $88, and all of that tax saving comes from federal and state income tax.

Daily Overtime Can Lift a California Check Sooner

Federal law counts overtime by the workweek. California usually also pays time and a half for hours over eight in a workday, and double time past 12. So a schedule of four 10-hour days can earn overtime here even though the week totals 40, unless the workplace has adopted an alternative workweek. Some jobs follow different rules, so check your wage order.

Eight overtime hours in a pay period, paid at $33.00, lift the gross check to $2,024 and the take-home to about $1,627. One short shift, by contrast, leaves $1,303. If your hours move around, build your fixed bills on the short check.

A $1 Raise Moves You Into a Higher California Rate

California's withholding rate on your top dollar is 4.4% at $22 an hour. The next rate, 6.6%, begins at about $47,160 of annual wages, which is just under $23 an hour. A raise to $23 adds $59 a check here. Only the part above the line moves to the higher rate, so the raise still leaves you ahead.

Next door, Nevada has no income tax and no SDI, so the same $22 an hour leaves $1,498, or $1,664 a year more than California. Arizona leaves $1,463, Washington $1,474 after its required payroll programs, and Oregon $1,355. A move is rarely decided on this alone, because rents and wages also change.
