HOW BONUSES ARE WITHHELD

How a Bonus Is Taxed on Your New York Paycheck

A bonus is a supplemental wage: ordinary income taxed at your normal rates when you file, but withheld under special rules. On a separate check, the usual New York total is about 41.78% of the bonus.

Federal rules let employers withhold a flat 22% on a bonus paid separately from regular wages (37% on supplemental wages above $1 million a year), or add the bonus to a regular paycheck and withhold on the combined amount as if it were paid every period — the aggregate method, which usually holds back more.

Publication NYS-50-T-NYS gives employers two options when a bonus is paid separately or shown as its own amount: withhold a flat 11.70%, or add the bonus to your most recent regular wages, figure the tax on the total, and subtract what was already withheld. A bonus blended into regular wages with no separate amount is taxed as one payment for the pay period.

New York City residents pay a second layer. Publication NYS-50-T-NYC sets the city's supplemental rate at 4.25% on the same terms. It follows where you live, which is why Form IT-2104 asks if you are a city resident: someone who only commutes into Manhattan does not pay it. Yonkers has its own rules, which this calculator does not add.

New York Paid Family Leave also comes out of a bonus at 0.432%, but it stops at $411.91 for the year. A $75,000 salary already uses $324.00 of that cap, so only the next $87.91 can come from a bonus, and anyone earning about $95,350 or more pays no extra PFL at all.

WORKED EXAMPLES

New York Paycheck Calculator With Bonus: Worked Examples

Bonus take-home pay on a $75,000 salary, single filer, bi-weekly pay, no bonus deferral. The regular bi-weekly paycheck at this salary is about $2,222.41 after tax.

Estimates use 2026 federal withholding, a 22% flat federal rate, 7.65% FICA, and 11.70% New York supplemental rate, plus New York Paid Family Leave.

$25,000$2,925$14,575$13,02247.9%

Reading the table: New York's flat 11.70% is high enough that the aggregate method can hold back less on a small bonus, then more as the bonus grows. Neither method changes the tax you owe. Any excess withholding comes back when you file your federal and New York returns.

KEEP MORE

How to Keep More of a New York Bonus

A traditional 401(k) deferral from a bonus avoids 22% federal and 11.70% state withholding, about $337.00 per $1,000 deferred, and city residents keep another $42.50 out of NYC withholding. Social Security, Medicare and PFL still apply to the deferred amount.

USING THE CALCULATOR

How to Use This New York Paycheck Calculator With Bonus

  1. Enter your annual gross salary and the bonus amount you expect.
  2. Pick your pay frequency — it decides how the aggregate method annualizes the combined check.
  3. Choose how the bonus is paid: a separate check or added to a regular paycheck.
  4. Set your federal filing status, your IT-2104 total, and any 401(k) or pre-tax deductions.
  5. Compare both methods in the bottom panel to see which one matches your pay stub.

To tell which method your employer used, divide the federal tax withheld on the bonus line of your pay stub by the gross bonus. A result near 22% points to the flat method; a noticeably higher result points to the aggregate method, and the New York paycheck calculator with bonus shows both side by side.

COMMON QUESTIONS

New York bonus Paycheck Questions

How much is a bonus taxed in New York?+

Outside New York City, a separate-check bonus is usually withheld at 22% federal, 11.70% state, 7.65% Social Security and Medicare, and 0.432% Paid Family Leave, about 41.78% in all. A $5,000 bonus at those rates leaves about $2,911. Withholding is a prepayment, and your return settles the final tax.

How much is a bonus taxed in New York City?+

City residents add 4.25% for about 46.03% in total, so a $5,000 NYC bonus leaves about $2,698, or $213 less than the same bonus outside the city. Set the calculator to New York City resident to see your own figure, including the combined-wage method.

Is the New York bonus tax rate really 11.7%?+

That is the flat withholding rate, not your tax rate. Your bonus is added to your other income on Form IT-201 and taxed at your normal New York rates. When 11.70% is more than you owe on that income, the extra comes back as a refund or a smaller balance due.

Do I pay NYC tax on a bonus if I only work in the city?+

No. New York City income tax applies to city residents, so a commuter's bonus has no NYC line. Nonresidents who work in New York State still have New York State tax withheld, which is why the state 11.70% applies to the bonus even when you live elsewhere.

Does Paid Family Leave come out of a New York bonus?+

Yes, at 0.432% until you reach the $411.91 annual maximum. On a $75,000 salary only $87.91 of room is left, so a $25,000 bonus pays $87.91 rather than $108.00. The calculator applies that limit automatically.
