New York Paycheck Calculator With Dependents
Use this New York paycheck calculator with dependents to see how much each child adds to your check. Each dependent on Form IT-2104 removes $1,000 of wages from New York withholding, worth about $2.08 per bi-weekly check at $75,000 married, or $3.71 for New York City residents.
Enter your salary and the children and other dependents you claim to see how much each one adds to your New York take-home pay per paycheck.
Your pay and dependents
Dependents count on the federal W-4 and on New York Form IT-2104.
Take-home pay with dependents
Federal Step 3 credit plus IT-2104 allowances.
Step 3 counts $2,200 per qualifying child under 17 and $500 per other dependent, spread across your 26 paychecks. Each IT-2104 dependent allowance removes $1,000 from wages before New York tax is figured, and from NYC wages for city residents. The calculator applies the same count to both lines.

HOW DEPENDENTS CHANGE WITHHOLDING
How Dependents Affect Your New York Paycheck
On the federal side, dependents do not change your taxable wages. Step 3 of Form W-4 turns them into a dollar credit that payroll subtracts from the federal income tax withheld across the year.
Each qualifying child under 17 is worth $2,200 on Step 3 of the 2026 W-4 and each other dependent $500, as long as your total income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly). Social Security and Medicare are unaffected.
New York starts counting at your dependents. The IT-2104 instructions say you may not claim a withholding allowance for yourself or your spouse, and the withholding tables already subtract a deduction before any allowances are counted. Line 6 of the worksheet is the number of dependents you will claim on your state return.
An allowance removes $1,000 of wages, so its value depends on your bracket. At $75,000 married it lowers New York withholding by $2.08 per bi-weekly check, which is small next to the $84.62 federal credit for the same child. Almost all of the paycheck gain from a child comes from the W-4.
Form IT-2104 has two allowance lines. Line 1 covers New York State and Yonkers, and line 2 covers New York City. Dependents go on both, but the credit lines on the worksheet only reach line 1, so a city resident often ends up with different numbers on the two lines.

WORKED EXAMPLES
New York Paycheck Calculator With Dependents: Worked Examples
$75,000 salary, married filing jointly, bi-weekly pay, no pre-tax deductions, outside New York City, one IT-2104 allowance per child and none for the couple, because New York does not allow them.
| Children under 17 | Federal savings / check | New York savings / check | Bi-weekly take-home | Annual take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 children | $0.00 | $0.00 | $2,340.09 | $60,842 |
| 1 child | $84.62 | $2.08 | $2,426.78 | $63,096 |
| 2 children | $169.23 | $4.15 | $2,513.48 | $65,350 |
| 3 children | $178.46 | $6.23 | $2,524.78 | $65,644 |
| 4 children | $178.46 | $8.31 | $2,526.86 | $65,698 |
Why the gain flattens: at this salary federal withholding runs out after about two children, so additional Step 3 credits cannot lower it further. The rest of the credit is claimed on your tax return.

What Each Child Adds Outside and Inside New York City
$75,000 salary, married filing jointly, bi-weekly pay, W-4 Step 3 credit plus one IT-2104 allowance per child. City residents have a higher tax line and gain more from each allowance, because a child lowers both taxes.
| Children | NY tax outside NYC | Take-home outside NYC | NY + NYC tax | Take-home in NYC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 children | $132.93 | $2,340.09 | $234.46 | $2,238.56 |
| 1 child | $130.85 | $2,426.78 | $230.74 | $2,326.89 |
| 2 children | $128.77 | $2,513.48 | $227.03 | $2,415.22 |
| 3 children | $126.70 | $2,524.78 | $223.32 | $2,428.16 |
| 4 children | $124.62 | $2,526.86 | $219.61 | $2,431.87 |
THE IT-2104 WORKSHEET
The IT-2104 Worksheet Lines Parents Usually Miss
Dependents are only line 6. Several credits for families add allowances too. At $75,000 married, moving a parent of two from 2 allowances to 5 for the Empire State child credit lowers New York withholding by another $6.23 per check.
For 2026 the Empire State child credit is $1,000 per qualifying child under 4 and $500 per child from 4 through 16. It shrinks by $16.50 for every $1,000 of federal adjusted gross income above $110,000 for married couples filing jointly, $75,000 for single filers and heads of household, or $55,000 for married filing separately. You claim it on Form IT-213 at filing time, not through payroll.
| Worksheet line | Enter | Reaches line 2 (NYC)? |
|---|---|---|
| Line 6: dependents on your state return | 1 each | Yes |
| Line 10: child and dependent care credit | 3 | No |
| Line 11: earned income credit | 3 | No |
| Line 12: Empire State child credit | 3 | No |
| Line 13: NYC school tax credit (city residents) | 2 | No |
| Line 15: head of household with one job | 2 | Yes |

When to Update Your W-4 and IT-2104 in New York
In New York, a federal W-4 does not carry over. If you turn in a W-4 and no IT-2104, your employer may use zero allowances. The 2026 instructions also ask anyone who used the worksheet or charts on an earlier form to complete a new 2026 IT-2104, so a new child is a good moment to redo it.
- A child is born or adopted — add $2,200 to Step 3.
- A child turns 17 during the year — that child moves from $2,200 to $500.
- A dependent moves out or will no longer be claimed — remove them.
- After a divorce or custody change — only the parent claiming the child should list them.
- Your income rises above $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly) — Step 3 no longer applies.
A partner or relative you support can count as an other dependent if they pass the IRS qualifying-relative tests — see can I claim my girlfriend as a dependent. Paying for child care as well? A dependent care FSA covers it with pre-tax pay.

COMMON QUESTIONS
New York dependents Paycheck Questions
How many allowances should I claim on Form IT-2104 with two kids?+
Start with 2 on worksheet line 6, one per dependent. If you expect the Empire State child credit, line 12 adds 3 more, for 5 on line 1. City residents use Part 4 for line 2, which includes the dependents but not those credit lines, plus 2 on line 1 for the city school tax credit.
Why can't I claim an allowance for myself on the New York IT-2104?+
The IT-2104 instructions rule it out for you and your spouse, and a single person with one job and no dependents enters 0 on the form. New York's withholding tables already subtract a deduction before allowances are counted. California and Illinois do it differently, with an allowance for you on their forms.
What happens if I don't file an IT-2104 in New York?+
If you give your employer a 2020-or-later federal W-4 and no IT-2104, the employer may use zero allowances. Your dependents then do nothing for New York withholding until the form is on file. Any extra withheld comes back when you file, but your checks stay smaller until then.
Does the Empire State child credit change my New York paycheck?+
Only through the allowances you choose to claim for it. The credit itself is refundable and is claimed on Form IT-213 with your return, so the money arrives at filing. Entering 3 on worksheet line 12 simply lowers your withholding during the year in anticipation of that credit.
Do NYC parents enter different numbers on IT-2104 lines 1 and 2?+
Often, yes. Line 2 comes from Part 4 of the worksheet, which copies your dependents and a few adjustments but leaves out the credits on lines 7 to 14. A city parent can therefore have a higher number for New York State than for New York City.
