Your pay and dependents
Dependents count on the federal W-4 and on California Form DE 4.
Take-home pay with dependents
Federal Step 3 credit plus DE 4 allowances.
Step 3 counts $2,200 per qualifying child under 17 and $500 per other dependent, spread across your 26 paychecks. Each DE 4 regular allowance takes $168.30 a year off California withholding. SDI does not change.

HOW DEPENDENTS CHANGE WITHHOLDING
How Dependents Affect Your California Paycheck
On the federal side, dependents do not change your taxable wages. Step 3 of Form W-4 turns them into a dollar credit that payroll subtracts from the federal income tax withheld across the year.
Each qualifying child under 17 is worth $2,200 on Step 3 of the 2026 W-4 and each other dependent $500, as long as your total income is under $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly). Social Security and Medicare are unaffected.
Worksheet A of Form DE 4 counts one allowance for you, one for your spouse if your spouse is not claiming it separately, one each for blindness, and one for each dependent. The total goes on line 1a, labeled Regular Withholding Allowances.
A California regular allowance works as a tax credit. Method B figures the tax first and then subtracts $168.30 per allowance, so the saving is the same at $40,000 as at $400,000, as long as there is California tax left to reduce. That is about $6.47 on a bi-weekly check.
California does not read your federal Form W-4. Since 2020 the W-4 has been used for federal withholding only, and the DE 4 instructions say that without a completed form the employer must use Single with zero allowances, even if you are married with children.
NO DE 4 ON FILE
What Happens to a California Paycheck If You Only Update the W-4
California's default is the part that surprises new parents. Here is California income tax on the same $75,000 bi-weekly paycheck, depending on what payroll has on file.
| Form on file | California tax / check | California tax / year |
|---|---|---|
| No DE 4: Single, zero allowances | $123.86 | $3,220 |
| DE 4: Married (one income), 2 allowances | $40.84 | $1,062 |
| DE 4: Married (one income), 4 allowances (two children) | $27.90 | $725 |
Filing the form is worth $95.96 per check here, far more than the $12.95 the two children add by themselves. Over-withheld tax comes back when you file Form 540, but only then.

WORKED EXAMPLES
California Paycheck Calculator With Dependents: Worked Examples
$75,000 salary, married filing jointly, bi-weekly pay, no pre-tax deductions, DE 4 status Married (one income), two allowances for the couple plus one per child.
| Children under 17 | Federal savings / check | California savings / check | Bi-weekly take-home | Annual take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 children | $0.00 | $0.00 | $2,407.14 | $62,586 |
| 1 child | $84.62 | $6.47 | $2,498.23 | $64,954 |
| 2 children | $169.23 | $12.95 | $2,589.31 | $67,322 |
| 3 children | $178.46 | $19.42 | $2,605.02 | $67,730 |
| 4 children | $178.46 | $25.89 | $2,611.49 | $67,899 |
Why the gain flattens: at this salary federal withholding runs out after about two children, so additional Step 3 credits cannot lower it further. The rest of the credit is claimed on your tax return.
LINE 1A VS LINE 1B
California Dependents on the DE 4: Line 1a vs Line 1b
Children belong on line 1a. Line 1b comes from Worksheet B and is for people who plan to itemize, claim adjustments to income, or have large nonwage income. It earns one allowance for each $1,000 of estimated deductions above the standard deduction, and it works differently on your check.
Method B subtracts a line 1b allowance from wages before the tax is figured, so its value follows your bracket. It also earns no tax credit, which is why one line 1b allowance is worth less than one line 1a allowance at every salary in this table.
California's dependent exemption credit and Young Child Tax Credit are claimed on your state return, so they do not appear on this calculator or on your pay stub. The DE 4 penalty applies to allowances with no reasonable basis, so count only the dependents you will actually claim.
| Salary | One line 1a allowance | One line 1b allowance |
|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $168.30 | $66.00 |
| $75,000 | $168.30 | $88.00 |
| $120,000 | $168.30 | $102.30 |
| $250,000 | $168.30 | $102.30 |

When to Update Your W-4 and DE 4 in California
In California, give payroll a new DE 4 the same day you change your W-4. If you have a working spouse or a second job, the DE 4 says to claim allowances with one employer only, and that withholding is usually most accurate when they all go on the highest-paying job.
- A child is born or adopted — add $2,200 to Step 3.
- A child turns 17 during the year — that child moves from $2,200 to $500.
- A dependent moves out or will no longer be claimed — remove them.
- After a divorce or custody change — only the parent claiming the child should list them.
- Your income rises above $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly) — Step 3 no longer applies.
A partner or relative you support can count as an other dependent if they pass the IRS qualifying-relative tests — see can I claim my girlfriend as a dependent. Paying for child care as well? A dependent care FSA covers it with pre-tax pay.
USING THE CALCULATOR
How to Use This California Paycheck Calculator With Dependents
- Enter your annual gross salary.
- Enter qualifying children under 17 and any other dependents from Step 3 of your W-4.
- Pick your pay frequency and federal filing status.
- Enter the DE 4 allowances you claim for yourself and your spouse; the calculator adds one per dependent.
- Read the net pay and the amount dependents add to each paycheck.
The California paycheck calculator with dependents assumes one job per household. If you and your spouse both work, only one of you should claim the dependents on Step 3, or split the amount between your two W-4s.

COMMON QUESTIONS
California dependents Paycheck Questions
How many allowances should I claim on the California DE 4 with kids?+
Worksheet A adds one for you, one for a spouse who is not claiming separately, and one for each dependent. A married couple on one income with two children enters 4 on line 1a. Line 1b is a separate count for people who itemize, so children do not go there.
How much does one child add to a California paycheck?+
On a bi-weekly check, about $84.62 from the federal W-4 credit plus $6.47 from the DE 4 allowance, or $91.09 together, as long as federal withholding is large enough to absorb the credit. Almost all of the gain comes from the federal side.
Do I need a DE 4 if I already filled out a federal W-4?+
Yes. The W-4 controls federal withholding only. Without a DE 4, your employer must withhold California tax as if you were single with no allowances. At $75,000 that is $123.86 per bi-weekly check, against $27.90 for a married parent of two who filed the form.
Why is a California dependent worth the same at every salary?+
Because each regular allowance subtracts a fixed $168.30 from the computed tax instead of removing wages from it. A higher tax bracket does not make it worth more. Line 1b allowances work the other way: they remove $1,000 of wages, so their value does rise with your bracket.
What should two working parents enter on the DE 4?+
Each checks Single or Married (with two or more incomes). Then figure the total allowances once and claim them with one employer, usually the higher-paying job, with zero on the other. Claiming the same children on both forms can leave you under-withheld at filing time.
